After the most severe New Yearâs Eve in Fanoren history, spring finally arrived after a long winter. Although the damage in many areas was devastating, Fanoren survived the national crisis without too many human casualties, and positive momentum for recovery began to build throughout the country.
However, a time of great strife came again. The neighboring country of Zwelf suddenly invaded Fanoren without a declaration of war.
Ionia later learned that at the end of the year, the Royal Army and the court had already been aware of the unsettling developments in Zwelf.
Defying Fanorenâs prediction that the invasion would come from the Zweilink side, the first battlefield was the mountainous area to the northwest, where Ioniaâs squad was deployed. The mountain troops, widely deployed in the northwestern mountains, were engaged in small-scale violent clashes with Zwelfâs infantry units all throughout the region.
The platoon under Ioniaâs command was mostly made up of commoners. Five of them, known as the Special Forces, possessed special Powers:
Ionia, who destroyed anything he touched; Edgar Yorke, who could control the wind; Tobias Bosse, who could hear sounds from far distances; Xavier Erdland, who could restrain his opponentsâ movements without touching them; and Ebbo Steiger, who had superhuman strength.
Ioniaâs squad was intentionally assembled for special missions. They were not deployed to a specific area but were active as a special support unit dispatched to areas where the fighting had intensified.
Immediately after the war broke out, Ioniaâs squad was ordered to temporarily return to the royal capital.
âIonia Bergund, returning from the front.â
Stolf and other important members of the Royal Army were all present in the Supreme Office of the Palace of Defense during Ioniaâs first return to the capital since being appointed to his post.
Ionia saluted with beautiful posture. After his salute, he noticed that Gravis and Lucas, whom he hadnât seen in some three years, were also there. Gravis was now the chief of staff of the Royal Army, and Lucas was one of his deputy chiefs of staff.
Gravis had completed his Vow of Adulthood ceremony the previous spring and was now nineteen years old. In the past three years, he had completely lost his boyishness, and now his grandeur as royalty and his own ambition gave him a particularly strong presence.
Their gazes met for the briefest moment. Neither Ionia nor Gravis changed their expressions.
The reason why Ionia was called back to the royal capital was to withdraw his unit from the mountainous area in the northwest and dispatch it to Zweilink in the northeast. The mountains were now the main battleground, but the enemyâs offensive was half-baked, so this was preparation for the possibility that the enemy would invade Zweilink in the future.
The mountain region was large. While concentrating their forces there, the Royal Army was unable to devote many troops to Zweilink, so Ionia and his Special Forces were selected for the job.
They were in no position to say no to orders. Ionia silently accepted the appointment.
They were to move to Zweilink in three days.
